HMS IRWELL1923

HMS IRWELL in the Mersey in 1923 - from a postcard.

Ordered as HMS BRIDLINGTON and renamed HMS GOOLE in 1918. Converted in 1926 as the RNVR Drill Ship for Mersey / Manchester and renamed HMS IRWELL. In 1939, renamed HMS EAGLET II and used as a shore base and depot ship for trawlers at Liverpool. In 1942 renamed HMS IRWELL (to allow the commissioning of the aircraft carrier HMS EAGLE) and commissioned at Brikenhead as base ship for trawlers. Broken up in 1962.
